Sunday School for children begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 10:00.

We offer a different Rotation Workshop cycles for each season of the church year.

What are Rotation workshop Cycles?

This innovative way of experiencing Sunday School takes seriously the spiritual development of children while providing creative activities that engage children in a whole new level of learning and retention. The rotation-style model means that children work on the same story or concept for several weeks, using different approaches in each workshop. The following workshops are offered during each cycle in 2005:  storytelling with puppets, movies, art, drama, kitchen, computer games, and music.  This curriculum is supplemented with presentations of Godly Play stories that correspond to the Workshop theme.

What is “Godly Play?”

Jerome Berryman developed this curriculum for Montessori religious education. It is an imaginative approach to working with children that supports, challenges, nourishes, and guides their spiritual quest.  These presentations are repeated twice then the children have an opportunity to retell the story as they remember it.   We have modified one classroom for these presentations. Parents are welcome to observe and help out anytime.

During the summer, the three Episcopal churches in Rapid City join together to organize and run the Vacation Bible School, with St. Andrew's hosting the venture every other year. Located in the Black Hills, the Thunderhead Episcopal Center, the diocesan camp, provides the ultimate church camp experience.

Confirmation

Confirmation, a two year program, is for youth who are in 8th grade in the Fall of 2005 (or older).  The confirmation program is an opportunity for you to learn more about your faith, more about being a Christian, and more about being an Episcopalian.  If you decide to be confirmed when you are at least 16, it will be an opportunity for you to make a personal commitment to live out the Baptismal promises made for you by your parents, which are: to continue in the Apostle's teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread and in the prayers; to persevere in resisting evil, and whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord; to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ; to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself; to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.  Confirmation meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 5:15pm; dinner and youth group will follow.  Also, on the 4th Wednesday of each month you may meet with your adult sponsor, or on another date set by you and your sponsor.

Youth Group

Youth group is for all youth who are in 6th grade or older.  It meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm for dinner (immediately follows confirmation class), followed by the youth group program.  Some Wednesday nights all the youth will stay together, and some nights we will break into smaller groups, based on the year in school.  You will worship together, build up the youth community together, do some service projects together and learn a little more about your faith and being Christian.  Oh yeah, and have some fun too!

ADULT PROGRAMS

St. Andrew's offers a variety of adult education opportunities including a Sunday morning "education hour" for all ages (from 9am-10am),  weekly Bible study, lay ministry training, along with preparation for baptism, confirmation, and marriage.

Education for Ministry, a four year accredited program, is offered on Tuesday nights. EfM is based on learning through theological reflection. It is a great opportunity for you to learn bible, theology, and practical application. Please contact The Rev. Deacon Marty Garwood through the church office.

During Lent, there is a concentration of activities with discussions offered Sunday mornings between services, a bi-annual Seder supper, and Wednesday evening programs with worship, faith talks and a soup supper jointly shared by the three Episcopal parishes in the city. Following the Wednesday morning Eucharist, a discussion group meets during Advent and Lent.

Other opportunities for parishioners to expand their Christian education include lectures from the Diocesan Niobrara School for Ministry, Education for Ministry and the national Trinity Institute Conference, seen locally by satellite. Different retreats are offered locally and at the Thunderhead Episcopal Center in the Black Hills.

As a parish family, we interact through many fellowship events and organizations including The Men's Group, the Episcopal Church Women, The Prayer Chain, and The Dinner Club, as well as the occasional potluck dinner. Parishioners also have the opportunity to join national Episcopal organizations, such as the Brotherhood of St. Andrew and The Order of the Daughters of the King.
